24 weeks: the middle name

Posted on

A month ago, I told you guys I was going to tell you our son’s middle name “soon” and then forgot!  We picked Joshua as a favorite before I was even pregnant and then settled on it after we knew we were having a boy.  The middle name was a little harder.  Since we went with a Biblical name for his first name, I consulted a Bible baby names book that Den’s cousin, Jessica, had stowed in a tub of maternity clothes she let me borrow, and boom.  There is was.

Isaac.

If you haven’t read the story in Genesis, once upon a time there was a man named Abraham who had a wife named Sarah.  They desperately wanted a child, and God promised them one.  They were getting up there in years and Sarah scoffed at the promise.  But lo and behold, when they were about 100 years old, God gave them a son.

Now, we didn’t have to wait nearly as long (thank the Lord lol), but as you can imagine, we can relate to Abraham and Sarah’s story more than the typical couple.  I know the desperation Sarah must have felt when she sent her servant, Hagar, to Abraham so they might conceive a child together and she could have her child by this surrogate (there was a child born to Hagar, and it basically just caused a lot of problems, but then they had their own son many years later).  When you want children, it is so painful and frustrating to not be able to have them.  It is one one of the biggest ways I have realized who is really in charge and it is humbling.

Abraham and Sarah named their son Isaac and we decided that was perfect for our son’s middle name.  Isaac means “laughter” (can you imagine their laughter when they realized they were having a child at such an old age, and also how happy they must have been for this prayer to have been answered?).  As I may have mentioned before, I was giggling quite a bit those first few weeks after finding out I was pregnant.  And I know Joshua will bring even more laughter to our lives.

So Joshua Isaac Miller it is.  His initials will be JIM which is funny and cool, because his Great Grandpa Davis (my Dad’s Dad) was named James (Jim) and so was his Great Uncle.  It’s nice to be able to honor these family members, even if it’s by accident! lol

And on a totally random note, this is what I see when I look down:

I love it. :)

About Veronica

I have a kitchen addiction and love to collect & share recipes. My passion is baking but I love to cook as well. The only thing I don't like to do in the kitchen is wash dishes, but my husband generally does them for me in exchange for his dinner.

You are so precious…I’m wiping tears of joy away after reading this sweet post. I LOVE the middle name you’ve chosen…sooooo appropriate. I do believe the meaning of a child’s name has a great reflection on who they can become, so ‘laughter’ is SUCH an awesome choice for your happy little son. Just precious! And you can still balance on one leg??? WOWZERS! Hugs to you and a pat for that growing belly too. =) Thanks for sharing. Have an awesome and blessed week Friend. XO

    • You are so sweet, Marsha. I do hope our son is a cheerful little guy, and I kinda hope he gets Den’s sense of humor. I have a good one, but I’m not actually funny. I would love another funny man in the house. :D Yes I can balance really good – I was standing on one leg through a song at church yesterday b/c my foot had fallen asleep and I was shaking it. I kind of impressed myself. haha!

  4. Thank you for sharing that moving narration. Congratulations on your pregnancy, I really look forward to seeing little Joshua (39-24) that would be another 15 weeks or so, how exciting. I have four children, they mostly came at around 38 weeks. Wish you all the best and thanks for visiting my blog! And thanks I didn’t know Isaac meant laughter and my last son is called JIM after my father, James. What a coincidence!

    • Thank you so much Tami. I’ve passed the point where I think I look great (for a couple months I had such high self esteem and in my own eyes, had never looked better) and now I’m trying to disguise my hugeness by being silly. LOL! And life is definitely good.

    • LOL! I was careful with the initials b/c I got teased for my own as a kid (VD lol). We had considered Evan which really was my first choice b/c it’s a family name (my Great-Grandma’s maiden name is Evans) and I think it sounds good with Joshua. But I couldn’t let his initials be JEM b/c even though Jem is far behind our son, if his playmates ever discovered she was a rockin’ 80s cartoon…I just wanted to avoided any possible teasing. Overprotective mother alert! haha

  22. So many things I love about this post!!! First of all, you look GORGEOUS in that blue! You are all belly and nothing else! And I love the story behind Isaac as Joshua’s middle name…. Sarah and Abraham’s story is similar to yours and so that middle name has so much meaning. And it doesn’t hurt that it fits together so perfectly and sounds just right…. Joshua Isaac Miller :) And love that his initials will be Jim. You already have a few nicknames for him lol! :) You DO have so much to celebrate.
