So I guess you guys know all my dirty little yeast bread secrets, about all the loaves I’ve ruined over the years…
But hey, I’ve also won two ribbons for yeast bread! So I’m not totally helpless, right? I mean I have like some sort of maybe talent sort of.
Anyway, fellow Kansan blogger, Diana Starenisic Deane, a local historian and author of Shadow on the Hill, asked me to do a guest post for her on bread. Yes, she knows all about my bread failure escapades and she still asked me! Her book, which I’ve read and highly recommend–it’s a true life murder mystery!–features bread dough as one of the clues to Florence Knoblock’s murder, and she thought it would be groovy to have a food blogger to do a bread post. Heck to the yes, I’m all over that, qualified or not!
I don’t do many step-by-step tutorials any more, but I did for this post since it’s special, and I hope you’ll do me the honor of stopping by Diana’s blog to check it out today. Besides, you’ll want the recipe for this old-fashioned white bread. It’s super simple, without any fat, eggs, or milk, and wow you won’t believe how good a loaf made with just flour, water, sugar, salt and yeast can be! Especially when you slather it in butter. :) Click here to check it out!
AWESOME! One of my favorite ‘comfort’ foods is warm homemade bread slathered with butter! How wonderful you got to do a guest post for this special woman.

One of my co-workers has had the same results with yeast bread – and it kills her every time I bring her a loaf of my artisan bread!
Off to check it out – happy day V!

My Grandmother made the best homemade bread and rolls! Warm out of the oven slathered with butter – yum! I no longer eat like that but it was good at the time.

So did mine! She used shortening in hers but it was soo so good. Grandma’s food is always the best. :)

LOL well I haven’t had that phobia for years, but maybe I should have based on some of my failures-haha! White bread is always easy to turn out though.

I would have NEVER thought a recipe for yeast bread would be so simple! I can’t wait to try this. Do you suppose it would work wtih whole wheat flour too???
LikeLike
Yes but you might not need as much flour since whole wheat absorbs more water. Also, you might need to add some gluten to make sure it gets the right texture.

I didn’t know either of those things…thanks for the advice!

You kill me with your bread debacles. I am sure that you have more successes than failures! :)
Pass the butter please.

Veronica, your sense of humor shines through in your guest post — great pics and a lovely looking loaf, too! I like “plain & simple basic bread” and your recipe delivers. Yes, I think Florence would approve.
