Coconut Oil Coffee

Growing up, my Mom used to go through “nervous break downs” in the summer when we were home from school and one summer, her breakdown took on a whole new level of crazy when she went entirely mental for raw garlic.  This was obsession, I tell you.  You couldn’t get her to shut up about the garlic, and she’d be talking to you about the benefits of raw garlic while rubbing a clove that had been cut in half on the soles of her feet.  It was definitely an aromatic summer as she seemed to be convinced that rubbing her entire body in garlic cloves 24/7 was the cure to all her ills.

I love this photo of Mom! The huge glasses! The t-shirt without pants! The totally rad high top tennis shoes with neon orange laces! Caught her in all her glory, and as you can tell, she was thrilled.

That’s kinda how I feel about coconut oil.  I’m obsessed with it in an eat it, drink it, rub it all over my body kind of way.  It started with my first jar of extra-virgin organic coconut oil.  Oh mah goodness, have you ever tasted pure unadulterated extra-virgin organic coconut oil?!  You can just eat a spoonful of it straight and the delicate & pure coconut flavor is heaven and the solid oil melts instantly in your mouth–it’s like candy to me.  But I only allow myself half a spoonful a day and unlike real candy, it’s not addictive so I don’t have to keep going back for more.

I also have been using a teensy bit on the dry parts of my face and it works better than any moisturizer and it absorbs without leaving a greasy shine behind.  I’ve also taken to rubbing it into my hair and sleeping in a shower cap from time to time and my hair is always so soft and silky after washing it the next day.  And I know it sounds so weird, but I use it to scramble my eggs.  I know coconut and eggs sound so wrong together, but my Grandpa cooked them that way for us when he visited last summer and although weird, I loved it and now don’t use any other oil to cook my eggs.

Grandpa cooked us eggs to show off his porcelain skillet. He says nothing sticks to it, and it’s safer than regular non-stick pans.

Needless to say, when I ran across this recipe for coconut oil coffee, I knew I had to  have it immediately!  Whose ever heard of putting coconut oil in their coffee, right?  So weird! But hello, I have a family obligation to be a freak!  Is being weird going to stop the woman whose mother once rubbed her entire body with raw garlic for a week? I think not!

So try it I did.  Love!  Blending the coconut oil into the hot coffee makes it so creamy…without any cream!  I mean look at that cup up there, that was black coffee, and look how creamy it is with the coconut oil blended in.  Love the frothy top & the coconut flavor too.  :)  With a little stevia, this was so much better than any Starbucks $$$ cuppa, IMHO.  So good, you guys.  I hope you try it!  Just don’t use refined coconut oil, that stuff doesn’t have the health benefits of extra-virgin, nor the flavor (you can read the original post where I found this recipe to learn all about the health benefits).

What a great post – and photos too! I just finished my coffee, but tomorrow I will definitely be adding coconut oil. I love using it in my skillet and recipes, but am excited to try it in my coffee. Thanks so much for sharing.

  4. Oh that picture of your Mom! Does she know she’s on here? Lol! I hope not, she might start using garlic again…ha! ;) The line, “I have a family obligation to be a freak”, had me laughing out loud! Not surprising but, I’ve never seen coconut oil here.

    • Nope but she’d be laughing her butt off if she saw this. She finds her insanity just as hilarious as the rest of us. ;) Do you like the flavor of coconut? I might send you a little to try it to see if you like it.

      • Just a funny note, it used to be a running joke in our family that Mom would wear her tennis shoes no matter what b/c she’d often go around naked with her tennis shoes on and a friend of ours (yes, she ran around naked even in front of friends-AAAAA! lol) joked that she probably wore them in the bathtub.

        • Lol!! That is hilarious. The whole story cracks me up! She was just being a free spirit :D If you would have asked me a few months ago if I liked coconut my answer would have been no. Now, I like everything sweet. I have a bag of almond joys stashed in a drawer for “emergencies”, so yes, I like coconut :)

          • P.S. My Mom needs an intervention on her free spirit. LOL! Thankfully she will still put on something when Dennis comes over, but he knows for me to go in and warn her he’s coming first. He does NOT want to see that! lol One time a roofer walked in and found her naked (he was a friend, a teen who went to our church and worked for his Dad’s roofing company) and he said confided to his sister that it was SCARY. I think he used the words “scarred for life.” The woman had three children and has the saggy boobs and stretch marks to prove it. Poor guy! What a way to be introduced to the naked female body! haha!

  5. I share that love for the oil myself, The first jar that I had bought wasn’t scented, meant for high heat cooking.. the second, well yes, the obsession of eating it drives me a little nutty, LOL I too use it for hair and body/face moisturizer without fear of breakouts or greasy feeling. I have to try the coffee… have you tried sauteing chicken in it? INCREDIBLE! Love the pic of mom!

  7. There’s always coconut oil in my pantry. It’s as essential as olive oil or kosher salt, and I use it (almost twice weekly) every time I make popcorn. I will say I’ve never put it in my coffee though! I’m off to give it a try…

  16. I am so with you on this one. I’m obsessed too. I have a jar in the bathroom and one in the kitchen! I LOVE using it with eggs, it’s so amazing. I am also obsessed with canned coconut milk. I make whipped cream with it and add it to everything! I use the oil for pop corn and then top it with truffle salt. Ohmygosh. :)

  17. I have to say that I thought this sounded really bizarre, but you seemed so enthusiastic about it that I gave it a try. At first I just put the coconut oil in my coffee and it just looked like an oily mess. Then I read your recipe and put the mixture into the blender. Viola the intended result. But after whipping it in the blender, I needed to microwave the coffee to get it hot again. Yummy, though! I might have to blog about it : )

    • LOL, I had a friend do the same thing and he was wondering why it didn’t look creamy like mine. I asked if he put it in the blender and he gave me that “aw shucks” look b/c he didn’t follow the directions. lol. Glad you liked it! I saw you used much more oil and less coffee, I bet that really did make it like a dessert coffee!

    • I linked to the article on the health benefits in the blog but here it is for easier access: http://veggienook.com/2012/05/26/fearing-fat-and-coconut-oil-coffee/ . I hope you have access to it and if not, there’s always online shopping. Thank you Barbara, I meant this to be a light-hearted post but I know it does indicate that childhood for us was a bit strange, to say the least. But we were mostly happy and ended up OK, so it’s all good. :)

yepp. children have amazing resources. and your mom must have had some good genes since you all (well at least you and your sister who makes soap) turned out so smart and creative. also my father (and my mom too but to a lesser extent) has extremely odd traits which confine with madness but he did pass on to me some of his intelligence. if we have had “normal” parents maybe we would have turned out just boring and plain…

Unsweetened, non alkalized cocoa powder is jam packed with antioxidants. It is better than any Starbucks latte I have ever drank. I am addicted, I will drink this every morning forever!

    • How much cocoa powder do you add? I tried this the other day and wasn’t crazy about it, obviously not adding enough cocoa…! Usually I’m putting 2T coconut oil, coffee, ¼ t vanilla, and several drops stevia. But I’d rather add cocoa! How much?
